Cosmetic dentistry refers to any dental treatments that improves the appearance of a person's teeth, gums or bite.
We use them all the time to straighten, lighten, reshape and repair teeth.
Our most common cosmetic treatment is tooth whitening, which is also the least invasive way of achieving cosmetic improvement.
We can also veneer teeth to improve their shape, position and colour, provide bridges, dentures or implants to close unsightly gaps or reposition teeth with orthodontics or braces (some of which are now invisible).

Sometimes known as 'caps' these are restorations that cover a tooth and restore it to its normal shape and size, strengthening the tooth.
They can also improve the appearance of a tooth.
Crowns are necessary when a tooth is broken down and fillings will not solve the problem.
If a tooth is cracked or is root-filled a crown may be necessary to hold the tooth together so that the crack does not spread or the root-filled tooth does not fracture vertically.
Crowns are also used to attach bridges to teeth and also on implants.

Dentures are replacements for missing teeth that are removable from your mouth for cleaning.
Impressions are taken in your mouth and dentures are custom made in a dental laboratory.
The base of the upper denture usually covers your palate and the lower denture is horseshoe shaped to cover the lower ridge and allow space for your tongue.
Plastic dentures are less expensive than metal dentures, but can damage teeth that theymsit against.
Metal dentures are made from a cobalt chrome alloy with plastic teeth and gums.

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root, usually made of titanium, that is surgically anchored into your jawbone to hold a replacement tooth, bridge or denture in place.
The benefit of using implants is that they do not rely on neighbouring teeth for support and are permanent and stable.
Implants are a good solution to tooth loss because they look good and feel like natural teeth.
Implants tend to cost more and are not suitable for all mouths.
You will need to be assessed and have healthy gums and be in general good health.
