After graduating from Dundee University in 1990 Dr McGovern began his practicing career in Perthshire and worked in Lincolnshire and Angus before joining the Aviemore and Kingussie Dental practice in 2004. Graduating from Bristol Dental School in 2005 with a Diploma in Postgraduate Dental Studies, he has been closely involved in postgraduate dental development for many years.
He was awarded honorary membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 2018. He held the positions of Continuing Professional Development Tutor for both Tayside and Highland Region before taking the position of Vocational Training Advisor in NHS Highland with responsibility for overseeing the integration of new graduates into general practice in the region and for the design and delivery of their postgraduate curriculum.
