After qualifying from University College Hospital in 1978, I spent a short period working in both general practice and in the hospital sector in the UK. I moved to South Africa where I worked for two years in private practice. I returned to the UK to start my MSc in Paediatric Dentistry under Professor Winter at the Eastman Dental Hospital. I then spent over 12 years working as a full-time Lecturer and was promoted to Senior Lecturer at the Royal London Hospital.
As part of my duties I was in charge of the Children's Dental Trauma Unit and the clinical aspects of the MSc in Paediatric Dentistry. In 1988 I was awarded the Colgate Prize for my research on "Electronic detection of dental caries". As a clinical academic, I have published a number of research papers which you find listed under Publications. Whilst retaining my connection with The Royal London Hospital for a further two years on an honorary basis, I worked for Procter & Gamble as a Senior Dental Advisor.
I carried out research and contributed significantly to the company in several areas of oral health improvement.

It is a great privilege for me to be involved in helping children achieve optimal dental health that will set them up to have a great smile and healthy mouth for life.
I was originally taught a very mechanical, surgical approach; diagnosing the problem, remove it and replace the missing tissue.
During my 39 years of clinical practice, I've learned that this approach is limited.
My philosophy as a specialist Paediatric Dentist has evolved as I have come to realise the importance of treating the whole person and seeing the connection between a person's body, their teeth, lifestyle and their general health.

Paediatric dentistry is the specialty of dentistry that focuses on the oral health and unique needs of young people.
It is defined by the age of the patients that are treated, unlike all other dental specialities which are defined by the type of procedures that are carried out.
The goal of dental treatment for children is to help each child have a healthy mouth with a good bite which not only looks great but functions well in their permanent dentition.
This can be accomplished in a way that allows the children to have the benefit of cosmetic treatment which is not only functional dentally, but also optimises on their general health.

These are fairly common injuries sustained by children.
Repairing these involves ensuring that the nerves in the tooth are managed appropriately as well as making the tooth look as good as new.
The technique for bonding tooth coloured plastic to teeth is well established and is called the 'acid etch technique'.
It involves making the enamel microscopically rough and placing a layer of runny plastic that bonds to the roughened enamel chemically and mechanically.
The tooth coloured plastic is then placed on the layer of plastic that has been bonded to the enamel.
