A root canal is needed when the nerve & blood supply of the tooth (the 'dental pulp') is infected through decay or damage to the tooth.
If untreated, an infected dental pulp can be very painful and will eventually lead to a dental abscess.
The aim of the treatment is to remove all infection and dead/damaged pulp from the root canals and then to fill and permanently seal the canals.
It is a skilled and time consuming procedure.
